Tourism in the Face of Climate Change
Vulnerable low lying islands in the Pacific such as Kiribati find themselves negotiating the perceptible threat of climate change to their very existence and political moves to accelerate development in tourism to generate economic prosperity.
The Government of Kiribati has been leading efforts to adapt to climate change with global assistance from multilateral and donor agencies. However, at the same time, it has launched a 20-year vision (KV20) plan towards a wealthy, healthy and secure nation based on accelerated growth and strategic investment in human, natural and cultural capital. This political move prioritizes tourism and fisheries, sparking hope among many for a brighter and wealthier nation.
