Mauri and Welcome to Kiritimati. Also known as Christmas Island, Kiritimati is part of the Republic of Kiribati and it is also the main port of entry of the Line & Phoenix Island Group. It is the largest island of purely coral formation in the world, with a circumference of about 100 miles (160 km). Kiritimati is the Kiribati name for Christmas named after it was first sighted by the English Navigator Captain James Cook in 1977. Kiritimati is one of the Line Islands, a chain of atolls and coral islands on both sides of the equator in the central Pacific Ocean, 2,000 km (1,250 mi) south of Hawaii. There are four villages on Kiritimati, Tabwakea, London, Poland, and Banana. The old settlement of Paris is abandoned. Kiritimati was the site of several nuclear tests in 1957 (Operation Grapple) and 1962 (Operation Dominic) where you can still find remnants and moments of the Bomb testing on the island.
