Mauri and Welcome to Tarawa, the capital island of the Republic of Kiribati. The atoll is shaped like a sail of a canoe and is divided into South and North Tarawa. It is the second largest of the 16 islands in the Gilbert group. The atoll boasts a string of islets that stretches from Betio in the South to Naa Buariki in the North. Tarawa is best known for the WWII's ‘Battle of Tarawa’; bloodiest battle between the Japanese and US armed forces fought on the islet of Betio from 20-23 November 1943.
